Man mourns daughter among four teens killed in Manitoba Highway 8 crash
An 18-year-old girl from Sandy Hook and three other teenagers died when a van hit their car on Highway 8 near Winnipeg Beach.
Four teenagers, including Maya Borsa, 18, from Sandy Hook, were killed when a southbound van struck their car as it crossed Highway 8 near Winnipeg Beach on Sunday night. The collision happened at about 9:15 p.m. amid heavy rain and reduced visibility. RCMP reports indicate the vehicle was traveling west on Provincial Road 229 when the van hit it.
Seventeen fatalities have been recorded on Highway 8 over the past five years, prompting calls for safety upgrades such as flashing red lights, a four-way stop, and repaired rumble strips. Winnipeg Beach Mayor Terry Calof has asked Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor to consider a 24/7 flashing light at the site. The province will conduct a review of the intersection while the investigation proceeds.
