Man on psychotic episode attacks six hospital workers with metal bar at Merseyside NHS facility

At Newton Community Hospital, a 20-year-old man identified as Omar Momand entered the building shortly after being turned away from a GP surgery and, while allegedly experiencing an acute psychotic episode, launched a violent spree lasting roughly thirty minutes. He used a metal bar hidden at his waist to strike six NHS workers—including nurses, a receptionist, a pharmacy assistant and other staff—inflicting head, shoulder, elbow and leg injuries; the bar was reported to have bent from the force of the blows.

Several victims sought refuge by locking themselves in a bathroom or the out-patients area, and staff attempted to escape through locked doors. The assault concluded when police, aided by a police dog, subdued Momand. In a prepared statement, Momand said he had drunk orange juice he thought was spiked by a neighbour, leading to confusion and memory loss of the events.
