Man pushes senior woman onto Bronx subway tracks, then seeks psychiatric evaluation
A 65-year-old woman was shoved onto the tracks of the northbound No. 5 train in the Bronx, and the attacker later turned himself in at a mental-health clinic.
At approximately 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, a 65-year-old passenger standing on the northbound No. 5 line at East 180th Street and Morris Park Avenue was unexpectedly pushed onto the tracks by an unidentified individual. A nearby bystander quickly summoned officers, who paused their routine station inspection to assist the woman back onto the platform; she incurred only a minor knee injury and was later taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
The perpetrator, who appeared to have no prior connection to the victim, later entered a psychiatric clinic, openly confessed to pushing someone onto the tracks, and asked for a mental-health evaluation. Police took him into custody on Friday, but he continues to be evaluated at the clinic. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the unprovoked assault.
