Man receives 20-year sentence for manslaughter in Texas Killing Fields case

In a rare trial connected to the decades-long Texas Killing Fields murders, a Galveston County jury sentenced James Dolphs Elmore Jr., 61, to the statutory maximum of 20 years for manslaughter in the 1986 killing of 16-year-old Laura Miller. Investigators allege Elmore prepared a vial of cocaine that was administered to Miller by his longtime friend Clyde Hedrick, who had earlier been convicted of manslaughter for the 1985 death of Ellen Beason and died by suicide before a grand jury could consider additional charges.

Miller’s body was among dozens of women found in a remote field off Interstate 45 southeast of Houston between the 1970s and early 1990s, a series of cases that have inspired books, films and a Netflix documentary. While most of the killings remain unsolved, recent developments include the 2022 guilty plea of Oklahoma death-row inmate William Reece to three Texas murders, resulting in life sentences. The sentencing underscores ongoing efforts to bring accountability to the long-standing mystery of the Texas Killing Fields.
