Man receives life sentence for killing in-laws over inheritance in Var

A 41-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Var Assize Court for the murder of his wealthy in-laws, Patrick and Marie-Laure Lauro, after a trial in Draguignan.

The Var Assize Court in Draguignan handed down a life-long sentence, with a 22-year period of safety, to 41-year-old Anthony Barotin for the double homicide of his parents-in-law, Patrick and Marie-Laure Lauro. The victims managed the Domaine des Sources, a luxury property in Tourves that was to host a wedding when the killings occurred. Investigators said Barotin, burdened by debt and hostile relations with the couple, entered the house after cutting the electricity, shot his mother-in-law in the shower and his father-in-law in the hallway.

The murder weapon was later retrieved from a lake where Barotin claimed to have disposed of it. Although he later alleged that masked men and a former police officer forced him to act, the court dismissed those claims as unsubstantiated. The verdict underscores the severity of familial financial disputes turning violent.
