Man sentenced to 27 years for murder and attempted murder in Melbourne stabbing

Robin, 30, was sentenced by Justice Andrew Tinney to 27 years in prison, with at least 20 years to be served, after being found guilty of murdering Navjeet Singh, 22, and attempting to murder Sharwan Singh, 30. The court described the attack as extreme, wanton violence that frightened the community. The stabbing took place in Melbourne’s southeast in the early hours of May 5, 2024, after Robin had spent the evening drinking whiskey with friends to celebrate his brother’s car purchase.

When Sharwan left the party and later returned with Navjeet to collect belongings, Robin launched a sudden, unprovoked assault, stabbing Sharwan in the chest and repeatedly stabbing Navjeet, who later died from injuries to his heart and lung. Sharwan survived the attack. Robin and his brother fled interstate but were arrested in New South Wales two days later.

The judge rejected Robin’s claims of remorse, noting his flight and lack of regret. Navjeet’s father observed the sentencing via video link, and a civilian witness testified about the broader impact of the crime. Robin has already served over two years in pre-sentence detention and faces possible deportation to India after release.
