Man sentenced to 30 years and caning for sexually assaulting daughter

A court in Muar sentenced an unemployed man to 30 years in prison and 15 strokes of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter.

In Muar, an unemployed father received a 30-year jail sentence and 15 strokes of the rotan after admitting to three counts of sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter between October 3 and 5 at their home in Segamat. Sessions Court judge Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid highlighted the gravity of the offenses and the victim's lack of choice due to force and threats. She stressed that the public’s interest cannot be eclipsed by the accused’s rights, noting the persistence of similar crimes despite harsh penalties nationwide.

The case came to light after the girl confided in her stepmother, prompting a police report on October 6. The court also mandated counselling during imprisonment and three years of police supervision following the sentence.

Why it matters

The case underscores the judiciary's tough stance on child sexual abuse and the use of corporal punishment in Malaysia.
