Man sentenced to community service after arrest warrant for cigarette butt littering

Fadil Idris, director of the Perlis Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation, said a self-employed man in Kangar failed to attend three court summonses for discarding a cigarette butt. SWCorp obtained an arrest warrant with police help, and the man finally appeared on Aug 20, receiving a sentence of four hours of community service cleaning roads and drains near Dataran Sena. He was the only one of four offenders to report for the first session of the state’s community-service programme.

A second offender also faced a warrant but did not attend, submitting an official letter to explain his absence; further defiance could lead to a fine between RM2,000 and RM10,000. As of Sept 13, Perlis had issued 655 Notices of Offence for the same littering violation.
