Man sentenced to life after confessing to 1994 Manchester murder
Robert Lloyd, 53, pleaded guilty to the 1994 killing of Michael McDermott in Manchester and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years.
In a dramatic turn, 53-year-old Robert Lloyd turned himself in to Greater Manchester Police and confessed to taking part in the brutal 1994 murder of 26-year-old Michael McDermott in Moston, Manchester. The attack involved a gang of masked men armed with baseball bats and knives who broke into a house on Ashville Terrace around 10:30 pm on 9 November, stabbing McDermott as he lay on a sofa. The assailants escaped across the road to a ginnel, then to Oakville Terrace, where a waiting car drove them away.
After the case was reopened by the GMP major investigation team last October, Lloyd was tried at Manchester Crown Court, pleading guilty and receiving a life term with a minimum of 17 years. Reporting restrictions were lifted by a judge, and Detective Inspector Rachel Smith urged anyone with further information to come forward as the investigation into the other attackers remains active.
