Man sentenced to life for hammer murder of bedridden mother in Hampshire
Michael Bowen received a life term with a 16-year minimum after killing his 65-year-old mother, Janet Bowen, with a hammer in Yateley.
In a case heard at Winchester Crown Court, Michael Bowen was convicted of the brutal killing of his 65-year-old mother, Janet Bowen, who was unable to defend herself after a recent stroke. The attack occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Eve at their residence in Maple Gardens, Yateley, Hampshire, where Bowen repeatedly struck his mother with a hammer. The judge described the assault as "ferocious and sustained" and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years, plus further punishment for possessing cannabis and damaging a nearby property.
Defense counsel Tina Adkin KC highlighted Bowen’s recent decision to quit drugs and his remorse, noting a diagnosis of substance-induced psychotic disorder. However, the jury rejected a diminished responsibility defence. Victim impact statements from Samantha Bowen, the victim’s daughter, underscored the family’s devastation.
