Man sentenced to manslaughter after fatal bicycle attack on pensioner at Leeds bus stop

A 24-year-old was sentenced for manslaughter after he rammed his bike into a 79-year-old man at a bus stop in Garforth, Leeds, causing the victim’s death from a heart condition.

At a bus stop outside a Tesco store in Garforth, Leeds, 24-year-old Thomas Childe challenged 79-year-old Colin Starbuck for riding his bike on the pavement. After an initial exchange, Childe returned on his bicycle, deliberately collided with Starbuck and, after a brief struggle, threw him to the ground, where Starbuck hit his head and suffered cardiac arrest. He was taken to hospital but died, with a pathologist linking the heart failure to the assault.

Childe, who had earlier faced a murder charge, admitted manslaughter at his hearing. Judge Tom Bayliss KC described the act as a deliberate attempt to intimidate and harm the pensioner, noting Childe’s lack of remorse.
