Man sentenced to six years for knife-threatened burglary in Scarborough

A Scarborough man received a six-year-and-six-month prison term after a home invasion in which a victim was threatened with a kitchen knife.

In a night-time burglary in Scarborough's Esplanade district, Matthew Williams, 35, and Kyle Smith, 19, forced entry into a resident's home, brandishing a kitchen knife against the victim's throat and taking a 55-inch TV, a wallet, alcohol, tobacco and the knife itself. CCTV captured a silver Ford Transit van linked to the offenders, which was later found parked on the Edgehill estate with knives concealed behind a bin.

Police recovered the weapons, the stolen TV and wallet, and identified DNA and fingerprints tying the men to the crime. Both suspects were arrested on Seamer Road shortly after midnight; Williams also possessed Class A and B drugs. At York Crown Court, Williams was sentenced to six years and six months and ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge, while Smith received a three-year suspended sentence with a £187 surcharge. The victim, though unharmed physically, described lasting psychological trauma from the ordeal.
