Man who sprayed vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar to be sentenced Wednesday
Anthony Kazmierczak, who sprayed a vinegar solution at Rep. Ilhan Omar during a Minneapolis town hall, is set to be sentenced after a plea deal.
During a Jan. 27 town-hall meeting in Minneapolis, Anthony Kazmierczak rose from the crowd and sprayed a syringe-filled liquid of water and apple cider vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar, accusing her of “splitting Minnesota apart.” Security officers quickly subdued him, and he was arrested on a charge of assaulting a U.S. officer. In court, Kazmierczak could not clearly explain his actions, describing his memory as “fuzzy.”
Prosecutors have asked for a 14-month prison sentence, and a sentencing hearing is set for Wednesday following a plea agreement. The attack unfolded as Operation Metro Surge saw more than 2,000 immigration officers conducting a major crackdown in the Twin Cities, sparking protests and the deaths of two U.S. citizens. Kazmierczak’s background includes alcohol abuse, mental-health concerns, and a recent Parkinson’s diagnosis.
