Man wounded in late-night shooting near Marseille’s Bel Horizon tower

At approximately 22:00 on Sunday, a series of gunshots rang out near the Bel Horizon tower in Marseille’s 3e arrondissement, prompting calls to police from nearby residents. Firefighters responded and attended to a man, born in 1969, who sustained four gunshot wounds to his leg; he was subsequently taken to hospital with his life not in danger. Officers conducting a preliminary sweep recovered several 9 mm cartridge cases scattered on the tower’s stairwell.

A short distance away, a vehicle was found ablaze in the Frais-Vallon neighbourhood, which investigators believe was used by the gunmen who fled the scene. The case has been assigned to the Division de la criminalité organisée et spécialisée and is being treated as an attempted voluntary homicide. The incident adds to a recent spate of shootings in the Bel Horizon area, a zone plagued by drug-trafficking rivalries and frequent violence against dealers and residents.
