Man Wrongly Accused of Threatening Trump Remains in Deportation Battle

Ramón Morales Reyes, a Mexican-born dishwasher living in Milwaukee since 1986, was arrested by ICE in May 2025 after the Department of Homeland Security alleged he penned a letter threatening President Donald Trump. The letter, written in English and referencing a "30 yard 6" rifle, was later attributed to a man who had assaulted Morales Reyes, suggesting an attempt to frame him before he could testify. Morales Reyes was released on bond in June but still faces deportation, with a hearing set for December.

His children, Ana and Antonio, described ongoing online harassment, depression, and anxiety caused by the false accusation. Attorneys Mark Thomsen and Cain Oulahan are pursuing a $5 million civil claim, while DHS has not removed its original press release. The case underscores concerns about wrongful immigration enforcement and its impact on immigrant families.
