Manchester United eye Newcastle defender as backup plan for left-back spot
Manchester United are reportedly shifting focus to Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw after failing to secure left-back Lewis Hall.
Michael Carrick's defensive options remain uncertain, with left-back Luke Shaw lacking a true understudy as Manchester United prepare for a four-competition season. The team had shown interest in Newcastle and England full-back Lewis Hall, but the Magpies have refused any formal offer, reportedly planning a two-year extension for him. Consequently, United have turned to Hall's colleague Malick Thiaw, a 25-year-old who arrived from AC Milan and can operate as a centre-back or right-back.
Thiaw is in the second year of a long-term contract and has already worn the captain’s armband in Dan Burn's absence. While it is unclear if Newcastle will sell, United are compiling a shortlist that may include Dortmund defender Daniel Svensson, according to German sources.
