Manchester United lose two starters ahead of Atletico Madrid Champions League clash

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick confirmed that Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez will miss Tuesday’s Champions League match in Madrid after injuries sustained over the weekend.

Manchester United travel to Madrid for their first Champions League away game in three years, but Michael Carrick revealed a double injury setback. Both Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez failed to travel, having suffered issues in the weekend’s league match, leaving them out of the squad. The left-back position is further compromised as Patrick Dorgu is out with a hamstring injury from international duty and Noussair Mazraoui remains a doubt after a recent knock.

Diogo Dalot is expected to cover the left side, and Leny Yoro may be selected at right-back after starting over Dalot in the previous league game. United’s defensive options are thus severely limited for the encounter with Diego Simeone’s Atletico.

Why it matters

The injuries weaken United’s defense ahead of a crucial Champions League tie, affecting their chances of progressing.
