Manitoba minimum wage lags far behind living cost estimates in 2026
A new report shows Winnipeg workers need $20.31 per hour to afford basic living costs in 2026, while the province's minimum wage will rise only to $16.40.
According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives' Living Wage Update 2026, a Winnipeg resident must earn at least $20.31 per hour in 2026 to cover basic living expenses, a modest increase from $19.77 the previous year. The report also lists Brandon's living wage at $17.40 for 2026, up from $16.22, and Thompson's at $18.73, up from $17.89. Manitoba's minimum wage is set to rise by 40 cents on Oct. 1, reaching $16.40, a change that a Winnipeg resident, Anika Atique, called insufficient given rising costs.
The analysis points to higher food prices and transportation costs as primary drivers of the increased living wage figures. It further clarifies that the living wage metric does not include savings for retirement, education, or discretionary spending such as entertainment.
