Manitoba Mother Demands Accountability After Four-Year-Old Dies in Child Services Care
A four-year-old died while under the care of Child and Family Services in Long Plain First Nation, prompting an RCMP investigation and sparking calls for accountability from the grieving mother.
Police were dispatched to a Long Plain First Nation residence on Sunday after a four-year-old was discovered in distress; she was later pronounced dead and her one- and two-year-old sisters were hospitalized, one in critical condition. The children had been under the custody of Waywayseecapo Child and Family Services, part of the Southern First Nations Network of Care, since October. Their mother, who has been attending treatment and parenting classes, alleges she warned a CFS worker about bruising and was dismissed, and now urges accountability.
RCMP Major Crimes Services assumed the investigation, and no charges have been filed. Manitoba Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine said her department will conduct an internal inquiry and has referred the case to the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth. Both the Southern Chiefs' Organization and the Waywayseecapo agency have offered condolences but will not comment further while investigations continue.
