Manitoba PC leader Obby Khan resigns amid party infighting

Obby Khan declared his intention to relinquish the leadership of Manitoba’s Opposition Progressive Conservatives and to quit the party caucus, opting to serve as an Independent. He explained that internal fighting forced his decision and that he would not betray his principles to stay. Khan’s tenure lasted about one and a half years, during which the party faced turbulence, including the recent resignation of campaign director Stephen Carter and a confidence vote that recorded 13 votes for him, six against, and one absentee.

Following his departure, the PCs will occupy 19 seats in the 57-member legislature, with the NDP under Wab Kinew holding 34 seats, the Liberals one, and three Independents. The next provincial election is scheduled for October 2027.
