Manitoba will stay on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Kinew

Premier Wab Kinew announced that Manitoba will not revert to standard time on Nov. 1, keeping the province on permanent daylight saving time.

Manitoba will keep daylight saving time throughout the year, eliminating the bi-annual clock change, Premier Wab Kinew announced on Thursday. The province joins Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon, all of which have already stopped adjusting clocks. The announcement came after a May poll conducted by Prairie Research Associates, which found that the vast majority of respondents favored a permanent time arrangement.

Kinew referenced medical studies that associate clock changes with disruptions to circadian rhythms and increased health risks. He explained that under permanent daylight time, sunrise on June 21 will be at 5:20 a.m. and sunset at 9:41 p.m., while on December 21 the sun will rise at 9:24 a.m. and set at 5:30 p.m.

Why it matters

Keeping daylight saving time year-round affects daily schedules, health considerations and aligns Manitoba with neighboring provinces.
