Many Canadian women lack guidance on accessing menopause care, report shows

A new GreenShield report finds that 40% of women in Canada do not know where to obtain menopause support, with higher uncertainty among racialized women.

GreenShield Health released a study indicating that 40% of Canadian women lack knowledge of where to find menopause care, and the gap widens for racialized women, with 45% reporting uncertainty. Only one-third of these women have spoken to a health professional about their symptoms, versus about half of the overall sample. While some employers provide menopause support, almost 25% of respondents say such programs are not culturally appropriate.

An Ipsos poll conducted in March for GreenShield showed that 33% of women experience delays of more than two years before receiving effective treatment, citing confusion over symptoms, dismissed concerns, and difficulty locating resources. Menopause typically begins around age 51 in Canada, following a perimenopausal transition marked by irregular periods and a range of symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood changes.

Why it matters

Understanding the lack of accessible menopause resources highlights gaps in women's health support and informs policy and workplace improvements.
