Marco Rubio Emerges as a Potentially Historic U.S. Secretary of State

Marco Rubio, the senator once ridiculed by Donald Trump, has begun to build a diplomatic résumé that some analysts say could rival historic American secretaries of state. Early in his tenure he instructed State Department staff to prioritize policies that make the United States stronger, safer and more prosperous, signaling a break from previous approaches that valued global approval. At the Munich Security Conference he warned against unchecked free trade and highlighted cultural ties between Europe and America, while in 2025 he helped secure a NATO agreement to raise defense spending to 5% by 2035.

Rubio has also maintained openness to talks with Iran, pursued dialogue on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and taken a leading role in the administration’s campaign against Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. Though his achievements are still being tested for durability, his visibility and popularity within the Republican base set him apart from typical secretaries of state.
