Marian Hussein announces she will not seek re-election as SV deputy leader

Marian Hussein confirmed she will not run for another term as deputy leader of Norway's Socialist Left Party, citing harassment and racism as key factors.

Marian Hussein announced to NRK that she will not stand for another term as deputy leader of the Socialist Left Party (SV), a post she assumed in 2023. She explained that ongoing harassment and experiences of racism have taken a toll and shifted focus away from the issues she wishes to champion. Hussein dismissed suggestions that party insiders forced her resignation, emphasizing the external noise as the primary cause.

Despite stepping down from party leadership, she will retain her seat in the Storting for Oslo and keep leading the labour and social committee for the next three years. The party's leadership has faced broader challenges, including calls for change from local figures such as Anette Solberg. SV's other deputy leader, Lars Haltbrekken, has not yet confirmed his intentions regarding re-election.

Why it matters

The departure highlights the impact of harassment on minority politicians and may affect SV's leadership dynamics.
