Marinakis defends government stance on North Macedonia talks and tax policy

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said the ruling party opposes any cancellation of the North Macedonia accession process and highlighted tax cuts that have boosted revenue.

Speaking to reporters, Pavlos Marinakis addressed Antonis Samaras' reaction to Ursula von der Leyen's statements on North Macedonia, emphasizing that Greece will not block any measures supporting the country's EU path. He recalled that Kyriakos Mitsotakis had previously raised concerns about the deal but ultimately supported its parliamentary approval. Marinakis argued that the ruling New Democracy party has pursued a policy of maintaining national interests while facilitating integration.

He also rebuked Alexis Tsipras' claims of excessive taxation, citing 83 direct and indirect tax cuts, increased property tax revenues, and a 95% rise in investments since 2019. The spokesperson added that higher VAT collections in 2026 generated additional funds returned to society.

Why it matters

The statements clarify Greece's position on a key regional EU accession and its fiscal strategy amid political criticism.
