Marine Police Detain Over 2,700 in Nine Months Amid Major Seizures

Malaysia's marine police have arrested 2,707 individuals across 7,627 maritime crime cases from January to September, seizing assets worth RM525 million.

During the first three quarters of the year, Malaysia's marine police recorded 7,627 maritime offences and detained 2,707 suspects, according to director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri. The crackdown resulted from operations like Op Taring Gelora, Op Taring Landai and coordinated patrols with neighbouring countries’ enforcement bodies. Fisheries-related breaches topped the list with 3,214 cases, while violations of the Dangerous Drugs Act, Control of Supplies Act, Immigration Act and anti-trafficking statutes followed.

Authorities seized assets and imposed fines amounting to RM 525 million. Looking ahead, the marine police plan to expand with 22 projects under the Malaysia Plan and 19 additional proposals costing RM 2.28 billion, including new operational bases, two aircraft and five fast patrol crafts each valued at RM 100 million. The ceremony also honoured former Sub-Inspector Jakarta Makling with the inaugural Marine Police 2026 Hero Award for his 1976 anti-piracy actions.
