The organization confirmed the change after extensive talks with president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto, stating a new direction is needed for the future.

In his statement, Wilson thanked the organization for the past two years and praised the players’ effort throughout the campaign. He also hinted at possible discussions about a different role within the franchise. The Mariners had finished the prior season with a 90-72 record and an ALCS run under Wilson’s leadership.
