Mariners unveil bronze statue honoring 2001 post-9/11 flag-carrying celebration

A bronze statue honoring a spontaneous flag-carrying lap by former Mariners outfielders Mike Cameron and Mark McLemore has been installed at T-Mobile Park as part of the team's Legacy Plaza. Unveiled before a game versus the Oakland Athletics, the monument captures the moment the club clinched the American League West on September 19, 2001, the first night baseball resumed after the 9/11 attacks. Cameron, McLemore and veteran broadcaster Rick Rizzs participated in the dedication, reflecting on the significance of the event for the city and the nation.

The installation features a wooden-bat backdrop representing each of the club’s 116 wins that season, and more than 2,000 personalized medallions that fans can purchase to support the Mariners Legacy Field Projects, which aim to restore youth baseball and softball fields in Washington. Mariners chairman John Stanton highlighted the plaza’s role in linking the franchise’s history with community investment. The statue joins other recent commemorations, including a tribute to Ichiro Suzuki and a planned Randy Johnson monument.
