Mark Walter explores early exit from Dodgers-Lakers TV contracts for cash
Mark Walter has been looking for financing and approached Charter Communications about ending the Dodgers and Lakers local TV agreements early for a lump-sum payment, but the talks did not progress.
According to reports, the Dodgers currently enjoy one of the most lucrative local television arrangements—a 25-year, $8.35 billion contract averaging $334 million a year. Walter, seeking liquidity, asked Charter Communications whether the company would buy out the remaining term of those deals in exchange for upfront cash. Charter evaluated the proposal but no agreement was reached. The effort reflects Walter's broader search for capital beyond simply selling his sports holdings.
Why it matters
An early buyout could disrupt a multi-billion-dollar TV revenue stream for two major franchises.
