Marvel's Wolverine game showcases Squamish language and British Columbia scenery

The upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine video game will feature Squamish Nation signage and several British Columbia landmarks when it launches on PlayStation 5.

Marvel’s Wolverine, scheduled for a September 15 release on PlayStation 5, incorporates authentic British Columbia settings such as North Vancouver, the Lions Gate Bridge and the Sea-to-Sky Highway. While the protagonist rides a motorcycle, two highway signs show the Squamish language terms for Whistler (Sk̲wik̲w) and Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh). Senior art director Gavin Goulden, based in Vancouver, emphasized the need for accurate Canadian representation, noting Wolverine’s Canadian origins in Alberta.

Squamish Nation chairperson Wilson Williams called the moment “more than just a cameo,” highlighting its role in keeping the language visible today. Industry voices including Cary Brisebois, Sarah Christina Ganzon, Aliki Marinakis and Nikki Johnston praised the subtle yet genuine Indigenous inclusion and its potential to raise awareness of the region.

Why it matters

The game brings Indigenous language and Canadian locales to a global audience, boosting cultural visibility.
