Mass civilian casualties reported after Israeli missiles hit al-Sabra shelters in Gaza

Israeli missiles struck two residential buildings in Gaza's al-Sabra district, killing dozens and leaving many bodies unrecovered.

On an evening in Gaza City, Israeli forces launched a series of missiles that hit two adjacent residential structures in the al-Sabra neighbourhood, where thousands of displaced people had taken refuge. Survivors such as Osama Abu Sharia described the explosion, darkness, and debris that trapped them. Rescue crews later uncovered 112 corpses, among them 40 children, 38 women, 7 disabled persons and 23 elders, while many others remain missing.

Witnesses said no prior alert was given and that the area was crowded with families seeking safety in the villa of former Palestinian public works minister Mufeed al-Hassania. The attack has reignited criticism of Israel's targeting practices in densely populated civilian areas.

Why it matters

The strike highlights the severe civilian toll of the Gaza conflict and raises questions about compliance with international humanitarian law.
