Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Candidate Shawn Oliver Arrested After Alleged DUI Crash

New Bedford city councilor and Republican lieutenant-governor candidate Shawn Oliver was arrested on multiple DUI-related charges after his SUV flipped and struck parked cars.

Shawn Oliver, who represents Ward 3 on the New Bedford City Council and is running for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket, was arrested late Saturday night following a crash on Dartmouth Street. Police said his SUV flipped over and hit five parked vehicles, causing serious damage to two. After receiving medical care at St. Luke's Hospital, Oliver was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation, marked-lane violation and speeding.

GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue expressed disappointment, urging Oliver to suspend his campaign immediately and promising to seek his resignation if elected. Massachusetts Republican Party chair Amy Carnevale said the party is awaiting additional details, while New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell asked the councilor to publicly address the allegations. Oliver remains on the ballot for the November 3 election alongside Minogue, who will face incumbent Democrats Maura Healey and Kim Driscoll.

Why it matters
