Massachusetts probe reveals over 270 priests abused nearly 1,000 children
A state investigation uncovered that more than 270 Catholic priests in three Massachusetts dioceses sexually abused almost 1,000 minors over several decades.
The Massachusetts attorney general released a comprehensive report showing that more than 270 Catholic priests abused close to 1,000 children in the Fall River, Springfield and Worcester dioceses over many years. The investigation concluded that diocesan leaders repeatedly chose to protect the church’s image rather than safeguard minors. While the majority of the abuse occurred before 2002, the probe resulted in three referrals to district attorneys and one criminal charge in Worcester.
The Worcester diocese said it would study the report to identify additional reforms, whereas the other two dioceses have not issued statements. The findings echo the broader Catholic abuse scandal that gained worldwide attention after the Boston Globe’s 2002 series. Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell, a survivor of abuse herself, called for new state laws to eliminate statutes of limitations for civil claims involving childhood sexual abuse.
