Massive blaze engulfs fuel depot near Sulaimaniyah, dozens of tankers destroyed

A large fire ripped through a fuel storage depot near Sulaimaniyah, injuring about 20 people and destroying dozens of tankers.

Around midnight on Monday, a large fire broke out at a fuel depot in the Tanjaro area near Sulaimaniyah in Iraq’s Kurdish north, igniting a warehouse that stores the region’s main fuel supplies. Video verified by Al one outlet showed towering flames and thick smoke as emergency crews and security forces responded, and several explosions were reported as the blaze spread. The conflagration destroyed 34 petrol tankers and four gas-oil tankers, consuming more than 3 million litres of fuel.

Deputy director general Hersh Saeed Saleem said no fatalities occurred but about 20 people were injured, all with minor wounds, while Shafaq News reported two burn cases, one requiring hospitalization. Deputy Governor Shaho Osman confirmed the fire is now contained, with civil defence leading the effort and Erbil teams on standby. Market officials, including Ramyar Rizgar and warehouse owner Sheikh Abdullah, expect the incident will not push regional petrol prices higher.

Why it matters

The fire threatens fuel supplies and could affect energy prices in Iraq’s Kurdish region.
