Massive blaze engulfs Thessaloniki recycling plant, choking city with smoke

A large fire erupted early Monday at a recycling facility in Diavata, Thessaloniki, producing dense smoke that has spread across much of the city.

In the early hours of Monday, a major fire broke out at a recycling plant in the Diavata district of Thessaloniki, igniting a thick plume of smoke that has enveloped large parts of the city. The incident occurred in the industrial area between the old national road, the Hellenic Petroleum complex, and the Egnatia highway. Fire services have deployed 18 firefighters and six fire engines, supplemented by water from municipal hydrants and additional equipment, but the blaze is proving hard to control because the facility stores extensive quantities of plastic and other bulky materials that fuel the flames.

Authorities note that the surrounding zone is industrial with no residential buildings, limiting the risk of the fire spreading to homes. Nevertheless, the smoke and strong odor are making the air oppressive for residents throughout Thessaloniki. Efforts continue to contain the fire, which is expected to require large volumes of water and possibly the creation of firebreaks.

Why it matters

The smoke from the fire is affecting air quality and daily life for thousands of Thessaloniki residents.
