Massive crude oil plume erupts in Niger desert, authorities say situation partly contained

A crude oil leak in a remote part of Niger created a ten-metre-high spray and spread hundreds of metres across the ground, with officials reporting the incident is ongoing but partially under control.

The spill occurred in a desert area of Niger at the end of September, producing a towering column of raw oil that reached about ten metres in height. The oil has seeped across a wide stretch of terrain, prompting the energy ministry, overseen by the military junta, to declare the situation still developing but partially contained. An investigation is underway with assistance from Algerian experts. The affected facility is operated by a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation.

Why it matters

The spill threatens a fragile desert ecosystem and involves a Chinese state oil firm, raising regional environmental and geopolitical stakes.
