Massive data breach exposes personal details of millions of Canadian Crime Stoppers tipsters

A hack by the group Internet Yiff Machine leaked over 1.5 million Crime Stoppers tips, revealing personal information of many tipsters and prompting safety concerns.

A hack in March by hacktivist collective Internet Yiff Machine exposed more than 1.5 million tips submitted to Canadian Crime Stoppers, some dating back 25 years. The leaked files contain personal details such as full names, street addresses, phone numbers and banking information, putting tipsters and others at risk of retaliation or fraud. Cybersecurity scholars highlighted the failure of the third-party platform P3, managed by Navigate360, to safeguard anonymity promised to users.

The RCMP has joined a joint investigation with the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association, noting no confirmed threats yet but warning of potential safety issues. Crime Stoppers officials said they are awaiting a comprehensive audit from Navigate360 and have not yet decided how to inform affected individuals. The incident raises questions about data retention practices and accountability for outsourced security services.

Why it matters

The leak compromises the anonymity of crime-tip contributors, potentially endangering individuals and undermining trust in public safety programs.
