Massive Fires Erupt at Russian Samara Oil Hub After Reported Ukrainian Strike
Large blazes broke out at a key oil pipeline and storage complex in Samara Oblast, Russia, after a Ukrainian attack was hinted at earlier in the day.
A major oil pipeline and storage site in Russia’s Samara Oblast ignited, producing extensive fires and thick black smoke, as captured in online video footage. NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System detected several heat anomalies at the complex, which includes pumping stations, tank farms and blending facilities near the village of Prosvet. Earlier that day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alluded to a strike on oil installations in the region, without naming the specific site.
The Ukrainian General Staff later confirmed that a drone attack on October 2 damaged eleven RVS-20000 tanks, three RVS-50000 tanks, sections of pipelines and an automated oil production station at the LVDS "Samara" facility. These attacks are intended to curtail the Russian Federation’s military-economic potential. The fire’s cause has not been officially confirmed, but the damage aligns with the previously reported drone strike.
