Massive protest in Murcia demands end to evictions and lower rents

Thousands gathered in Murcia’s Plaza de la Cruz Roja to chant against evictions and call for rent controls.

On a rainy evening, protesters assembled at Murcia’s Plaza de la Cruz Roja after a call from the Sindicato de la Vivienda and the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca. The crowd moved along Teniente Flomesta Avenue and Gran Vía, chanting anti-eviction slogans and demanding rent reductions, while also targeting the city mayor with chants for lower rents. Union spokesperson Jorge Molina claimed recent actions have forced a change in attitude among regional governments and “vulture” funds, yet he stressed that the halt of evictions remains insufficient and urged continued pressure for permanent rental contracts and the return of homes held by investment funds.

PAH representative Paco Morote warned that Murcia’s housing crisis is worse than elsewhere due to low wages and soaring rents, and a young participant named María described the situation as a denial of basic rights. Government delegate Francisco Lucas warned that families live in fear of eviction and urged choosing between supporting citizens or speculative funds. The march concluded in front of the regional government building, the Palacio de San Esteban.

Why it matters

The protest underscores Spain's widening housing affordability crisis and mounting pressure on authorities to curb evictions.
