Matolcsy György releases video denying any role in alleged Erste Bank extortion
Hungarian central bank governor Matolcsy György posted a YouTube video rejecting claims that he or the MNB pressured Erste Bank to remove a board member.
Matolcsy György, governor of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, uploaded a video to his YouTube channel to address the scandal surrounding an alleged extortion of Erste Bank. He asserts that he was unaware of any discussion about pressuring the bank and that no directive was ever issued by him or the central bank. According to Matolcsy, only the former MNB deputy Kandrács Csaba and Erste Hungary’s head Jelasity Radován could verify whether such a conversation ever took place.
The dispute originated when former governor Simor András claimed that an MNB vice-president had urged the bank to dismiss a member of the Erste Group supervisory board, describing the episode as a robbery of the bank. Erste responded by filing a criminal complaint and an MNB-led probe was launched. Kandrács Csaba has publicly rejected any influence on the decision and is weighing a lawsuit against the unfounded reports.
