Matt Brennan claims sprint victory on Stage Two of the Vuelta a España
Britain's Matt Brennan surged to his first Grand Tour stage win on the Vuelta a España’s second day, while Tadej Pogacar kept the red leader’s jersey.
Stage two of the Vuelta a España, covering 214 km from Monaco to Manosque, ended with a dramatic sprint in which Matt Brennan, riding his first Grand Tour, secured his inaugural stage victory. The race had been set up for a showdown between Wout van Aert and defending champion Tadej Pogacar, yet van Aert was reeled in during the final kilometres and Pogacar chose to sit back, handing the win to Brennan. Spaniard Pau Miquel Delgado of Bahrain Victorious took second place, while Pogacar arrived third, maintaining his red jersey after a razor-thin 0.09-second advantage from the opening time trial.
Brennan moved up to third in the general classification, ten seconds behind Pogacar, as van Aert sits nine seconds back. Other notable riders included Ethan Hayter, who fell to 13th after an early break, and Josh Tarling, who finished 125th following his brother Finlay’s recent fatal crash. The peloton now heads toward the French Pyrenees for a mountain finish at Font Romeu.
Why it matters
The win marks a breakthrough for a rookie rider and reshapes the early standings of cycling’s premier Grand Tour.
