Mattarella urges governments and citizens to sow peace seeds at Assisi gathering

President Sergio Mattarella told the Community of Sant'Egidio that while governments must lead peace efforts, every individual also bears responsibility.

Speaking at the Assisi international peace meeting, President Sergio Mattarella praised the strength of religions to promote dialogue, respect for diversity and social cohesion. He described inertia in confronting wars, injustice, poverty and oppression as indefensible, noting these are human-made problems. Mattarella affirmed that planting the seeds of peace and restoring rights, equity and freedom is chiefly the duty of governments and institutions, yet no one is exempt from personal action.

He urged every individual, regardless of gender, to channel their passion and assume responsibility for peace. The president also recalled the 40-year anniversary of the original Assisi gathering initiated by Giovanni Paolo II, calling it a prophetic event that continues to inspire. He thanked the Comunità di Sant'Egidio for sustaining the “spirit of Assisi” through yearly international dialogues.

Why it matters

The call underscores the shared duty of leaders and citizens to address global conflicts and promote peace.
