Mattel releases $81 Marilyn Monroe Barbie inspired by iconic pink gown

Mattel is launching a new Barbie Signature doll that mirrors Marilyn Monroe’s famous pink dress from “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” priced at $81 and available on August 18.

Mattel announced a Barbie Signature doll that captures Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pink costume from her 1953 performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” The $81 collectible features the flamboyant bow, dramatic opera gloves and sparkling accessories that defined the look. Robert Best, Mattel’s vice president and dolls design creative director, explained the toy celebrates Monroe’s fashion influence as well as her reputation as a shrewd producer and boundary-pushing artist.

This addition continues a long-standing line of Monroe-inspired Barbies, which have included outfits from “The Seven Year Itch,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” and “How to Marry a Millionaire” since at least 1997. The doll will hit shelves on August 18 at the Mattel Shop and major U.S. retailers.

Why it matters

The launch taps into ongoing interest in Marilyn Monroe’s centennial, linking nostalgia with collectible markets.
