Matthew Brennan wins sprint stage of Vuelta thanks to Wout van Aert's lead-out
British rider Matthew Brennan claimed victory in stage 16 of the Vuelta a España, outsprinting Bryan Coquard and Vito Braet after a perfect lead-out from teammate Wout van Aert.
Matthew Brennan, riding for Visma Lease a Bike, triumphed in the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España, a flat 18.1-km route between Cortegana and Palos de la Frontera, marking his fourth stage win of the tour. He outpaced France’s Bryan Coquard and Belgium’s Vito Braet after teammate Wout van Aert delivered a textbook lead-out, launching the sprint with roughly 800 metres remaining. The stage featured a five-rider breakaway that was gradually reeled in, and a minor crash involving Tobias Halland Johannessen and Ivo Oliveira occurred 25 km from the finish without affecting the outcome. Enric Mas kept the red general-classification jersey, and the next day’s stage will head from Dos Hermanas to Sevilla.
