MÁV quietly kept Siemens Vectron contract, opening door to new locomotive talks

Transport and Investment Minister Vitézy Dávid announced on Facebook that MÁV did not cancel the framework agreement covering 115 Siemens Vectron locomotives, a deal signed under the previous government. He reminded that Lázár János had announced a public stop to the procurement, yet MÁV quietly maintained the contract because the cancellation was judged detrimental. According to Vitézy, Lázár was not informed of this covert continuation.

Because the agreement is still in force, the ministry plans to reopen talks with Siemens to secure further purchases on favourable conditions. The railway has had to lease Vectrons due to a shortage, paying more than the original terms would have allowed. Changes to European standards mean the contract will need amendment, and only a maximum of 50 units can be delivered before the original deadline. Vitézy cautioned that the outcome is uncertain but highlighted the gap between headline announcements and disciplined execution.
