Mayawati Announces BSP's Solo Run in Punjab's 2027 Assembly Election

Mayawati, leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, stated on August 25 that the party will contest the 2027 Punjab assembly election independently, refusing any pre-poll alliances. Punjab's Scheduled Caste population, recorded at 31.94% in the 2011 Census, is the highest among Indian states, yet this numerical strength has not translated into a unified Dalit voting bloc. Analysts note that Dalit voters are divided by sub-caste, religion and regional factors, which has enabled Congress, AAP, SAD and BJP to each secure segments of the community.
The BSP's past in Punjab peaked in 1992 with nine seats, but its share fell steadily to just one seat and 1.77% of the vote in 2022, even while allied with the Shiromani Akali Dal. The upcoming election will test Mayawati's ability to rally the fragmented Dalit electorate and whether a modest but concentrated BSP vote can influence the broader contest among AAP, Congress, BJP and SAD.
