Mayor and former mayor detained as Turkish probe targets opposition-run Çukurova municipality
A court ordered the pre-trial detention of Çukurova mayor Emrah Kozay, his predecessor Soner Çetin and 32 others in a corruption case, while fifteen suspects were released under supervision.
A Turkish court placed mayor Emrah Kozay, former mayor Soner Çetin and 32 additional individuals in pre-trial detention as part of a corruption investigation into the opposition-run municipality of Çukurova in southern Turkey. The move came after October 19 raids in which gendarmes detained 44 people and inspected municipal offices, later expanding the total number of suspects to 49. Authorities allege that municipal contracts were awarded through exemptions, that contractors paid bribes for payments, and that the municipality employed ghost workers, with investigators reviewing procurement documents from 2024 through 2026.
Three deputy mayors were jailed, a fourth released under supervision, and fifteen others were freed under judicial supervision; two suspects remain at large. Opposition lawmaker Burhanettin Bulut denounced the operation as a politically driven effort to undermine elected local governments, a claim the government rejects. The case is part of a broader series of investigations targeting opposition-led municipalities after the March 2024 local elections.
Why it matters
The detentions highlight tensions between Turkey's ruling party and opposition-run local governments, raising concerns about judicial independence.
