Mayor-elect Janeese Lewis George plans to end D.C. police ties with federal immigration and Trump task force

Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic mayoral candidate for Washington, D.C., announced that her inaugural actions will include an executive order terminating the Metropolitan Police Department’s collaboration with federal immigration authorities. She also plans to dismantle the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, a joint police-federal initiative that has produced over 16,000 arrests in its first year. George argued that the partnership drains city resources, burdens officers, and diverts them from protecting residents.

She said she will eliminate joint roll calls and patrol caravans associated with the task force. The candidate noted she is coordinating with the White House to schedule a meeting with President Donald Trump, who has publicly labeled her a “communist” and criticized her policies. George stressed her willingness to cooperate with any party for the benefit of the city while also defending her agenda against opposition.
