Mayor Mamdani appoints high-profile council to steer NYC economic policy

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a 15-member Business Advisory Council featuring CEOs, financiers and a chef to guide the city’s economic development agenda.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed the composition of his Business Advisory Council, a 15-person panel that will convene each quarter with him and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. The council brings together executives from Amalgamated Bank, Etsy, Northwell Health, Chobani, RXR, and other notable companies, along with New York Liberty’s CEO Keia Clarke and chef Marcus Samuelsson. Their mandate covers a wide range of industries, from finance and technology to sports, entertainment, retail and health care, aiming to bolster the city’s job market and affordability initiatives.

Mamdani has emphasized his desire to position New York as the best environment for startups and career growth. The appointment follows months of scrutiny over the mayor’s economic plans and delays in naming a leader for the Economic Development Corporation, now headed by Anthony Shorris. The council’s formation signals an effort to address those concerns by tapping prominent private-sector expertise.

Why it matters

The council could shape policies that affect jobs, business growth and affordability for millions of New Yorkers.
