Mayor Mamdani orders NYPD force review and boosts oversight funding

Mayor Zohran Mamdani directed the NYPD to conduct its first use-of-force review in ten years and added $2.6 million for independent oversight.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the NYPD will undertake its first comprehensive use-of-force review in a decade, allocating an additional $2.6 million to the Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD. The decision was prompted by the fatal March 2024 shooting of 19-year-old Win Rozario in Ozone Park, Queens, where officers fired after he lunged with scissors despite pleas from his family. One of the involved officers was allowed to retire before a disciplinary trial, sparking outrage from Rozario’s relatives.

Mamdani emphasized the need for the highest accountability standards when government force is used. The new funding will triple the oversight office’s personnel, aiming to strengthen policy guidance and public trust. The move follows Attorney General Letitia James’s earlier choice not to pursue criminal charges against the officers.

Why it matters

The review and funding aim to improve police accountability and restore public confidence after a controversial shooting.
